City Manager Shanda Huntington told the council that two rooms are intended for city police officers and the remaining eight would be used by the city to house short-term visitors such as auditors, inspectors and contractors.The city currently uses the Birchwood dormitory on base for that purpose, but QAP General Contractors of Anchorage recently approached the city about leasing the entire Birchwood through 2018.The budget anticipates .059 million in expenses – a 24% increase from the FY17 budget but less than the amount actually spent this past fiscal year.Around .879 million in gross profits are anticipated – a 42% increase from FY17."That way we can have a hearing at our regularly scheduled meeting [in May], and we can decide then with all the information if we are going to move forward with it this year or not.Because if we kick this too far down the road, it is not going to happen this year. They were looking at building their own buildings; they are probably not going to do that.If approved by the council it would have received a public hearing and a final vote at the council’s next meeting, but a 3-to-2 majority of council members did not want it to get that far in its current form.
The ordinance was up for introduction and a first reading at last night’s meeting.
QAP has the contract to renovate the Galena airport runway, which is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2017 and continue in 2018.
